JOB SUMMARY:  This position is located at the Mulberry Cove Marina which is part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department aboard Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. This activity is maintained and operated as a service for all active duty, retired military and their dependents.

 

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position may perform all or some of the following duties as assigned: Conducts sailing lessons to authorized patrons, ensuring their safety on the water during the scheduled lesson. Administers, grades and evaluates the basic, intermediate, advanced and night qualifications sailing test in both written and practical areas. Observes activities of patrons to ensure that safety rules are followed.  Provides information to patrons regarding safety rules and procedures.  Enforces applicable policies and procedures of MWR regarding the use of the marina/sailing.  Keeps boating area clean and free from hazards.  Observes wind and weather, tides, and currents conditions and makes recommendations to supervisor on appropriate action needed. Coordinates with the Aquatics Director for lifeguard scheduling requirements for classes. Responsible for all rigging/de-rigging of sailboats, returning them to a ready for rent condition. Inspects and notifies Marina Manager of unsafe discrepancies with sailboats at least one-week prior to each Sail Class. Notifies Marina Manager of the number and type of sailboats needed each week for classes scheduled. Greets customers, checks I.D. cards to ensure only authorized patrons utilize the program. Answers questions in regards to availability and cost. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Marina provides all sail boats and instructional materials for students. Will be assisted by Marina staff with launching and retrieving Flying Scot sailboats.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.  Must be certified by US Sailing to instruct students for Skipper “B” and Basic Keelboat certifications.  Must maintain US Sailing member status.  Must be able to properly instruct in correct progression with regard to individual student capability.  Classes will be taught by accepted procedures.  Must be familiar with boating terminology, water and boating safety, handling of boats (launching, mooring, etc). Must be able to handle both small and large sailboats in heavy winds. Must be aware of and comply with all safety regulations.  Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and written to understand instructions given and provide clear information to students.  Must be a mature individual with positive customer service skills, tact and good judgment. Experience with teaching youth sailing a plus .

NOTE:  Some positions have special requirements. Selection may be tentative pending the completion of the satisfactory employment reference checks and receipt of proof of education (where applicable). Selectee may be required to complete a one (1) year probationary period. Participation in the Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within the first 30 days of employment is required. We utilize E-Verify to confirm selectee’s eligibility to work in the United States. Salary is dependent on experience and/or education. SPOUSAL PREFERENCE: Spousal Preference can be used only once to gain regular full time employment in the commuting area but may be used multiple times for flexible type position.
