JOB SUMMARY:  This position is located in the Facility Maintenance Department which is part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department aboard Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. The purpose of this position is to serve as an automotive mechanic handling repairs on automobiles, machinery, vehicles and related attachments and tools.


Work involves troubleshooting, repairing, and/or overhauling of components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differential and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emissions control systems and related electrical , electronic, hydraulic, fuel and other assemblies. Tears down, adjustments, repairs, reassembles and runs operational checks on various components. Completes repairs of complex malfunctions which are difficult to trace due to complexity of vehicle components.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:  Knowledge of various techniques for removing, replacing, cleaning and installing a variety of pars, components and accessories such as filters, radiators, engine thermostats, wheel cylinders, universal joints, wheel bearings, springs, shock absorbers, mufflers, components of heating and air conditioning systems, brake components, catalytic converters, clutch assemblies, carburetors and suspension components including lower control arms, struts, constant velocity joints and stabilizer arms. Ability to determine when parts should be cleaned and reinstalled or replaced with standard parts. Basic understanding of on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment. Ability to test automotive computer control systems and emission systems. Skill in using basic tools and operating equipment common to the occupation. Basic understanding of makeup and operation of various individual automotive systems.


Qualification Requirements: Experience in A/C service and repair and recycling of materials; electrical/electronics repair; transmission repair and trouble shooting; front end alignment, both domestic and foreign; engine diagnostics; engine rebuild; brakes and welding. Must have ability to interpret and apply manufacturer’s manuals and technical specifications, diagnostic codes, computer printouts and various safety manuals. Supervisory Experience is beneficial. Must have a valid driver’s license and able to pass and maintain a forklift license. Strongly prefer a valid commercial driver’s license.  Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.

SPOUSAL PREFERENCE:  Spousal Preference can be used only once to gain regular full time employment in the commuting area but may be used multiple times for flexible type position.
